You’re here because you’ve had enough

Enough of promising yourself it will be different next time.
Enough of lying awake at night, replaying what happened.
Enough of the guilt, the hiding, the second-guessing, the sense that something which once felt manageable is now taking too much from your life.

Signs a Habit May Have Become a Problem

These problems rarely begin dramatically.

They often begin innocently – a drink at the end of a hard day, placing a bet when you’re bored, turning to weed to wind down.

Then, over time, something shifts.

The behaviour starts taking up more space.
The relief becomes shorter.
The fallout becomes heavier.
You begin to feel secretive, defensive, or stuck in a cycle you cannot quite explain — even to yourself.

This is how compulsive patterns work.
They pull you in with the promise of relief, then keep you there with stress, shame, and repetition.

You are not alone.  Many people struggle with compulsive behaviours around gambling, alcohol, drugs, gaming, pornography, eating, and social media.

And many of them are thoughtful, capable, responsible people who never imagined they would end up here.

This is not a sign that you are weak.
It is a sign that something has taken hold — and that support would help.

It is very common to hesitate before reaching out.

That hesitation is part of the cycle too.

But here is what I have seen again and again: when people stop carrying it alone, they often feel relief almost immediately.
Not because everything is solved in a day — but because they are no longer trapped in silence with it.

Talking honestly is often the first real turning point.

How Therapy Can Help

The fact that you are here, looking for help, matters.

It means a part of you is ready for something different.
A part of you is tired of the cycle.
A part of you wants relief that lasts.

Real change becomes possible when you bring the problem into the open with someone who understands compulsive behaviour, recovery, relapse patterns, and the emotional weight that goes with them.
Not someone who judges you.
Someone who helps you understand what is happening, why it keeps happening, and how to respond differently.

Together, we can help you:

  • feel more in control of your choices
  • reduce the shame and secrecy
  • understand your triggers and vulnerable moments
  • build practical strategies for urges, setbacks, and stress
  • strengthen accountability and support
  • get back to what matters most to you

I would be glad to help.

For more than fifteen years, I worked as a counsellor with the British Columbia government’s gambling support services. I was part of a team helping individuals, couples and families break free from compulsive behaviours.  Through that work, I learned what genuinely helps people make lasting change — not just in the short term, but over time.

I also learned how easily one compulsive behaviour can be replaced by another, and how important it is to build recovery around honesty, support, practical strategies, and accountability.

For four years, I produced and hosted a podcast – Fold Em: Help for Gambling Problems – for Gambling Support BC.  The episodes offer real stories and practical guidance for people struggling with their own gambling as well as for spouses, parents and family members impacted by this issue. You can find it on all podcast apps as well as at www.problemgamblinghelp.ca

You’ve come this far.

Something in you wants this to change.

That matters.

You do not need to have it all figured out before you reach out.

You only need to take the next step.
